Peggy McGee-Smith, a Kenmore resident and veteran American Red Cross disaster aid volunteer, will attend the opening ceremonies of the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City Thursday through next Tuesday, local officials announced Tuesday.

McGee-Smith took part in Red Cross relief operations in recent years for the Hurricane Sandy disaster and the wildfires in Arizona, according to Red Cross spokesman Jay Bonafede.

She will join other Red Cross volunteers at the ceremonies and related events because officials there anticipate the possible extent and frequency of emotional difficulties that guests will experience during the dedication and dedication preview events and Red Cross volunteers will be available to offer them on-site counseling as well as on-call assistance to event officials, Bonafede said.
