Letter: Gus Macker tournament should remain in Buffalo

Gus Macker tournament should remain in Buffalo

I was riding high when the Bills made their first-round selection last week, as I’m sure other Bills fans were.

On the same night, the Buffalo Police Athletic League laid a giant egg when television news reports came that the Gus Macker basketball tournament, a 20-year tradition in the City of Buffalo, was being moved to Darien Lake. I nearly choked on my chicken wing! The Buffalo Macker has been a summer staple in the city for decades – an event that brings out families, fun and commerce each year for one weekend when Buffalo comes alive. People of all races, ages and skill levels come together to be a part of the highly anticipated basketball event.

I must say I’m not surprised. After months of indecision, speculation, declarations and postponed meetings, the powers that be apparently could not secure a sponsor to hold the event where it belongs – downtown! Given the tourney has had such a historically high participation rate, and the fact that it charges $160 per team, is cost the real issue? I urge PAL to relinquish its “burden” of running the tournament to some other entity, so that it can be brought back to Buffalo in future years.

If the Bills’ draft pick had the city riding high on its proverbial sports roller coaster, this announcement about a treasured local event being moved to the farm has me thinking, “Get me off this ride!”
