Frank Bellavia Jr. of Niagara Falls shot a four-game 956 to lead the first squad in the opening night of qualifying Tuesday for the 51st annual George A Obenauer Masters Tournament at AMF Airport Lanes.

Bellavia bowled games of 243, 259, 217 and 237 to take the early lead by a healthy margin. Next came Mike Sadowy of Clarence Center with an 851 total. Bill Truman was next with 832.

A second squad of bowlers went off later, but the session ended too late for this edition.

The field of 124 bowlers will bowl another four-game qualifying round tonight to determine the 32-bowler field for the start of double-elimination match play on Thursday. Match play will continue on Friday and Saturday and will wrap up Sunday afternoon at the Cheektowaga facility.
