Ex-Castellani director Sandra Olsen to speak at museum Thursday, May 15

LEWISTON – Dr. Sandra Olsen, former director of the Castellani Art Museum, will talk about her experience of building a collection of contemporary art in the 1980s with founder Armand Castellani in “Art City,” the first of a series in Meet Me at the CAM programs at 10 a.m. Thursday in the museum on the campus of Niagara University, 5795 Lewiston Road.

Olsen will speak on her travels, often to Manhattan with Castellani, to fill the museum with the core of its collection to serve as a cultural and educational center for both Niagara County and Western New York.

It came to be a daunting task in the 1980s when prices were soaring as the global market became synonymous with financial investment. Castellani succeeded due to his business acumen, enthusiasm for learning and dedication to philanthropy.

Olsen is the director of the University at Buffalo Art Galleries and was the director of the Castellani for 21 years.

Meet Me at the CAM, a series of art history programs, is free for museum members and $5 for nonmembers. Light refreshments are available.

The next four programs – at 10 a.m. May 22, 29 and June 5 and 12 – will include screening of three films that focus on the art world in 21st century Manhattan, as well as Southwestern and West Coast artists and will conclude with a presentation on Western New York’s burgeoning cultural scene.
