Two meetings leading up to the May 20 school district budget vote and School Board elections are on the schedule this week.

A public hearing on the $55.8 million budget for 2014-15 will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the professional development room at Grand Island High School, followed by a regular School Board meeting. Spending is up 2.57 percent from last year’s budget of $54.4 million.

From 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, the PTA Council is hosting a Meet the Candidates Night in the Little Theatre at Veronica E. Connor Middle School, 1100 Ransom Road. Representatives from the League of Women Voters Buffalo Niagara will serve as moderators and timekeepers.

At least four candidates are running for three seats on the School Board: incumbents Susan Marston and Tak Nobumoto, and Karen Carroll and Mathew S. Green. Emily Ciraolo decided not to seek another term.

More people may be joining the race by Tuesday, however. A fifth candidate, Tammy Zulawski, withdrew her petition and state education law requires a deadline extension for new nominations. That deadline is Tuesday.

Petitions can be picked up at the district office at 1100 Ransom Road.

Also this week:

• A “Gram’s Garage Sale” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Golden Age Center, 3278 Whitehaven Road. There also will be a bake sale, plus hot dogs and soft drinks.

• The Grand Island Historical Society is holding a free open house from 2 to 4 p.m. next Sunday at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. Refreshments will be served.
