Let’s have a round of applause for Williamsville South High School.

South’s 106-member Wind Symphony, under the direction of Marni Conte, and the 42 students of the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Matthew S. Cool, took first place in an April 25 music competition at Harper College in Chicago.

The groups were among 13 schools from the U.S. and Canada, and placed first in both the Division A and AA classes.

Performing for three respected college band directors, the bands were rated on a 10-point scale in the categories of tone quality, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, technique and musicality for a total of 100 possible points.

The Wind Symphony earned an overall score of 93.20 and the Wind Ensemble a score of 93, taking the top spots. The Wind Symphony also earned the William D. Revelli Award for the highest score.

South competed against schools from Aurora, Brampton and Windsor, Ont.; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Tenn.; Murphysboro, Ill.; La Pocatiere, Quebec; Green Bay, Wisc.; Three Rivers, Mich.; Washington, Ind.; and Waynesburg, Pa.

• A Williamsville Village Board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Village Hall, 5565 Main St.

• The Amherst Recreation Commission meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Northtown Center at Amherst, 1615 Amherst Manor Drive.

• The Amherst Historic Preservation Commission meets at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Building.

• A meeting of the Sweet Home School Board begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Norman C. Vergils Community Center, 1901 Sweet Home Road.

• A meeting of the Senior Services Advisory Board begins at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Amherst Center for Senior Services, 370 John James Audubon Parkway.

• The Amherst Youth Board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Harlem Road Community Center, 4255 Harlem Road.

• The Amherst Planning Board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Municipal Building.
