West Side, Canisius rowers among crews to advance to nationals

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mother Nature made her presence felt all weekend at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships, but several Western New York boats earned rewards for braving the elements and earned trips to nationals by finishing either first or second in their respective races here on Sunday.

West Side Rowing Club Women’s varsity four finished first among club teams and second overall Sunday to earn the right to compete next month in the USRowing National Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The crew of Ashley Johnson (Clarence), Emily Radziwon (Orchard Park), Emily Evans (City Honors), Erica Lister (Sacred Heart), and coxswain Claire Conrad (Buffalo Seminary) finished in 6:31.702 – roughly five seconds behind first-place scholastic team Manhasset.

Canisius boats asserted themselves well as usual at states, with the Crusaders’ lightweight eight taking first in 5:06.060. The crew of Ben Zabel (cox), Patrick Bohen, William Mangan, Casmir Garrison, Dylan Sabuda, Allan Collins, Michael Braun, Matthew Flejtuch and Corey Luksch finished more than 8.5 seconds ahead of second-place Pittsford.

Canisius A boat took second in the senior eight as the boat of Ryan Flynn, Michael Battaglia, Daniel Jordan, David Militello, Brian Hamp, David McCormick, Max Paterson, Joe Ebner and Jake Filby (cox) finished in 4:59.563, just 1.5 seconds behind Chaminade A. Canisius boats also took second in the freshman boys eight, boys second eight and novice eight.

St. Joe’s boys novice four of Andrew Gehman, James Krolewski, Adam Trimper, Connor Logal and coxswain Erich Thur placed first, while the Marauders’ junior eight and novice four also took seconds.

Mount St. Mary novice eight featuring Grace Cambria, Hannah Lawrence, Olivia Cianchetti, Maria Mankowski, Sophie Carroll, Gabriella Congi, Molly Frauenheim, Alissa Miller and Emily Ngo (cox) won in 6:10.4. Nichols’ freshman girls four of Samantha Lazar, Gracie Newman, Victoria Krentz, Kayla Sienkiewicz and Hailey Miller (cox) also took first.
