Canisius baseball wins 12th straight

Canisius (34-14, 17-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) completed a three-game weekend sweep of Niagara, 15-5, in Lewiston for its 12th win in a row, longest in Golden Griffins baseball history. It also is the second longest active winning streak in the country in NCAA Division I. Niagara, which has lost 11 straight to Canisius, is 16-30, 8-14 in the MAAC.

The win and a victory by Quinnipiac over Fairfield on Sunday assured a first-round bye for the Griffs in the six-team MAAC Championship tournament May 21-15 in Lakewood, N.J. Any combination of two Canisius wins and Siena losses will lock up the No. 1 seed and outright regular season title. Canisius will complete its regular season conference schedule with three games home against Monmouth, starting with a doubleheader at noon on Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius had 18 hits against the Purple Eagles, with freshman Christ Conley leading the way with a career-high four hits and three RBIs. Seniors Jose Torralba and Jesse Puscheck each went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Meanwhile, in Amherst, another late University at Buffalo rally fell short and the Bulls (23-22, 12-11 Mid-American Conference) lost to Miami, 5-4. Matt Pollock had a pair of doubles for the Bulls, who lost all three games of a weekend series to the RedHawks (26-25, 15-9).
