Bills underscore their satisfaction at QB

The Buffalo Bills did not draft a quarterback.

And they don't plan to add another one in free agency.

After the Bills made their final draft choice tonight, GM Doug Whaley reiterated what he told me in March at the NFL owners meetings.

The Bills are set at quarterback.

"Never say never," Whaley said at tonight's draft wrapup news conference. "You never know what's going to happen. Somebody might get hurt in OTAs.

"But at this time we're very confident in the guys we have on campus."

The Bills have brought back all four of last year's quarterbacks: EJ Manuel, Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel and Dennis Dixon.

Whaley claimed those quarterbacks will be plenty competitive throughout the offseason and emphasized they are entering the second year of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's system. A new quarterback would be coming in cold.

"A backup should keep you .500," Whaley said. "Thad came in and got us close, 2-3. We're excited about that.

"Jeff Tuel came in and played against Kansas City, did some good things and made some mistakes. But we were cognizant of the fact he was an undrafted, college, free-agent rookie. So we expected him to make some mistakes.

"Dennis Dixon's been in the league for a while, and he brings a skill set that will complement what we're trying to do offensively."

Fourteen teams drafted a quarterback over the past three days.
