DEC extends comment on Shelby quarry, nixes hearing

SHELBY – The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week it is extending until June 9 the public comment period on the proposed Frontier Stone quarry in this Orleans County town. However, the DEC would not agree to hold a second public hearing.

Supervisor Merle “Skip” Draper had asked for another hearing after an overflow crowd attended an April 30 session the DEC held in Town Hall. Response to the company’s plans to open a 215-acre dolomite and limestone quarry on land near the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge was largely negative.

Draper said that those interested in voicing their opinions to the DEC should email, or mail letters to Scott E. Sheeley, DEC Region 8, 6274 Avon-Lima Road, Avon, N.Y. 14414.

Copies of the draft environmental impact statement are online at or can be read at Town Hall or in the Lee-Whedon Memorial Library in Medina.
