DEC accepting comments on CWM landfill expansion bid

The public can weigh in through early July on the long-anticipated application by CWM Chemical Services for a new hazardous waste landfill in Porter.

CWM filed an application with the the state Department of Environmental Application proposing to construct a new hazardous and industrial waste landfill.

The new landfill, dubbed “Residual Management Unit-2 (RMU-2),” would occupy about 44 acres just west of its current landfill and have a capacity of about 4 million cubic yards.

The proposal would extend CWM’s ability to accept hazardous wastes for an estimated 10 to 20 years.

CWM operates a 710-acre site in the towns of Lewiston and Porter.

The public comment period began Wednesday and will remain open through July 7.

Meanwhile, officials are accepting written comments until July 7.
