Canisius’ season ends with loss to Penn

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Canisius’ fourth straight visit to the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament turned into a short one on Friday.

The Golden Griffins dropped a 9-4 decision to Penn in a first-round game, played on the campus of the University of Maryland.

The Quakers refused to let Canisius get its offense untracked. Penn took a 7-2 lead at the half, and never let the Griffins get close the rest of the way. Canisius, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion, had been averaging almost 14 goals per game entering the contest.

Maria Kotas and Meghan Cuddy did all of the scoring for Canisius, netting two goals each. Kotas, the MAAC’s midfielder of the year, finished with 56 goals on the season. She finished her career with an even 200 points, tied for second with Lauren Walsh (2005-08) on the Canisius all-time scoring list. Carly Quinn is the all-time leader with 203 points.

Tory Bensen led the Quakers with four goals and an assist. No other Penn player had more than one goal, although Nina Corcoran finished with a goal and two assists. Kayla Scully of Canisius finished with four saves.

The Golden Griffins finished the season with a 12-7 record. Penn, the 13th-ranked team in the country, improved to 13-4. The Quakers advanced to play Maryland, ranked No. 1 in the nation, here Sunday.
