Verplanck Street woman charged with misdemeanor arson for trying to burn man

A 21-year-old Verplanck Street woman was arrested about 5 p.m. Thursday on misdemeanor arson and other charges for allegedly trying to set fire to the clothes a neighbor man was wearing as they argued in the first block of the street.

Shalanda K. Rivers was accused of threatening the neighbor with a knife and then splashing his clothing with bleach and trying unsuccessfully to set the clothing on fire with her cigarette lighter.

She was charged with a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, menacing and harassment. Buffalo Fire Department investigators were called to the scene in addition to police crews. Her intended victim told police Rivers had ruined his clothing with the bleach.
