Thieves target vehicles in Cheektowaga neighborhood

Cheektowaga residents are being warned to keep their cars locked when parked outside overnight, following a series of break-ins in the William Street area.

Residents reported at least 14 vehicles were entered and ransacked this past weekend. The crimes occurred on Edmund and Henry streets, Laura Court and Standard Parkway, police said today.

Cash, credit cards and assorted property were reported stolen. Police said an Edmund Street resident reported the theft of $2,100 in cash.

“It is important to note that in all 14 cases, the targeted vehicles were not locked at the time,” said Assistant Police Chief Jim Speyer.

Neighborhood patrols have been increased, police said, adding that it’s just as important for residents not to make themselves easy victims.

Residents should be alert and report any suspicious people in their neighborhoods, police said. In addition, vehicles should be locked at all times and residents are advised to never store anything of value in their vehicles nor leave valuables in plain sight inside them.
