Ex-UB standout Geltz suspended

Durham Bulls relief pitcher Steve Geltz – the former Wilson High and University at Buffalo star – was hit with a 50-game suspension Monday night by The Office of the Commissioner after a second positive test for a drug of abuse.

As per the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, the suspension is without pay and is effective immediately. Drugs of abuse are not performance enhancers. The suspension is for substances that include cocaine, marijuana, heroin, LSD, ecstasy and other opiates.

Geltz, 26, is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 16∑ innings over 11 games for Durham, a Tampa Bay affiliate. He went 5-3 with three saves and a 2.82 ERA in 41 games last year as Durham won the International League Governors’ Cup championship. Geltz, who pitched two games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2012, would be eligible to return in late June. The Bulls visit Buffalo July 10-13.
