May 2, 2004: Hero remembered after giving his life to save his comrades

The Marine who dove on a grenade to save his mates was laid to rest May 2, 2004.

A hero remembered: More than 1,000 people tell Cpl. Jason L. Dunham goodbye

"When word reached this rural community of rolling hills where Dunham would mow a neighbor's lawn for a cold can of pop, it came as no surprise that he had made the ultimate sacrifice to save others. ...

The Rev. Ron Sellers, a Methodist minister who preached at the service, described Dunham's final act of selflessness as spontaneous.

" 'Jason died as he lived, caring more for others than himself. Putting the safety of others before his own,' " Sellers said.

Dunham funeral
