May 2, 2004: The dwindling rights of smokers

Only 10 short years later, fewer and fewer would agree with late Buffalo News Editor Murray Light's assessment of smokers' rights.

Smokers have rights, too

"I have no problem with the prohibition of smoking in indoor and outdoor stadiums and other places accommodating large masses of people. Most non-smokers do not want to sit near a smoker. Whether that's a health hazard is questionable, but the smell of smoke makes many people uncomfortable, and they should not be subjected to it. But how could anybody legitimately object to smoking on a beach or in a park with their wide-open spaces and loads of fresh air?"
