Police gave chase in car and by foot through Amherst and into Niagara County Thursday afternoon after receiving a report of a thief taking merchandise from Wegmans supermarket at 3135 Niagara Falls Blvd. Amherst police eventually arrested two Niagara Falls men.

Responding to a call from store security, police arrived at about 4:30 p.m. as one man fled on foot with stolen merchandise and entered a car driven by an accomplice. Officer Stacey Klem reached the car, traveling north on Niagara Falls Boulevard, and attempted to pull it over. That gave way to a chase into the Town of Niagara, where the car crashed into a flagpole and sign near the corner of Military Road at Edgewood.

The two then fled on foot before one was apprehended by Klem, and the other was caught by Officer Kyle Lefevere. No injuries were reported.

Charles Myers, 38, was charged with burglary and petit larceny. James Jordan, 43, was charged with petit larceny and numerous vehicle and traffic violations.

Amherst police were assisted by the Town of Niagara Police and Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies.
