War Memorial to be rededicated

BATAVIA – A memorial that pays tribute to Genesee County residents who gave their lives during the nation’s four wars in the last century has been relocated and will be dedicated anew at 11 a.m. on Armed Forces Day, May 17.

The Genesee County War Memorial, four years in the making, had to be relocated when a new surgical wing was added to United Memorial Medical Center four years ago.

The original memorial was dedicated when Genesee Memorial Hospital completed a new building in 1951. It remained there for over 50 years.

The new site in a park next to The Jerome Center, an outpatient and urgent care facility, has seven Vermont granite panels inscribed with the names of 283 county residents who gave their lives in service to their country.

It is the only county-wide memorial, according to James B. Neider who heads a Joint Veterans Council that spearheaded planning and fundraising.

About $150,000 has been received.
