Three Niagara County sites eyed for new Customs and Border Protection station

The federal government is looking at three sites for a new border patrol station in Niagara County, including one many area public officials had hoped would be considered.

A 12-acre parcel in the northwest corner of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station is among three prospective locations for a new Customs and Border Protection station in the area, according to new documents released Thursday.

The other two potential sites are a 12-acre parcel on Williams Road in Wheatfield and a 47-acre parcel adjacent to the northern part of the air base in the Town of Niagara.

The locations were disclosed as part of a review of environmental impacts of the project. Public comments are being accepted through the end of the month.

A new border patrol station would include a communications tower up to 120 feet tall, perimeter fencing and lighting, a canine facility, vehicle wash areas, parking areas and a backup power generator.

The existing station, one of the oldest in the country, is located at Lafayette Avenue and Hyde Park Boulevard in Niagara Falls, near the city’s border with Lewiston and the Town of Niagara.

Public officials in recent years have called for the new station to be located at the air base as a way to ensure the facility’s viability in case it again is targeted for closure.

The Williams Road parcel, located on the west side of the road just south of David Chevrolet, is owned by David C. Smith Sr. Enterprises LLC. The Town of Niagara parcel, which has frontage on Tuscarora Road just south of Lockport Road, is owned by Harold J. Smith and Gordon F. Smith, as trustees of the Felicia Smith Trust.

Ten other sites were reviewed but did not make the final cut. Six of those sites were in the Town of Niagara and the others were in Ransomville, Porter, Wheatfield and the Falls.
