Koelmel joins Buffalo Place board

Buffalo Place, the downtown business improvement district, has named HarborCenter President John R. Koelmel as the newest member of its board of directors.

Koelmel, former president and CEO of First Niagara Financial Group, will succeed Stephen Fitzmaurice as part of the nonprofit organization that provides maintenance, marketing, security, entertainment and other services in the central business district.

Fitzmaurice stepped down a month ago after being laid off from his job as chief operating officer of Seneca One Realty and the former One HSBC Center, which is now in foreclosure. Koelmel is in charge of the Buffalo Sabres’ new $172.2 million hockey and entertainment facility that is now under construction on the former Webster Block.

The board is also nominating architect Steven Carmina to succeed Larkin Development Group Principal Howard Zemsky, whose term is expiring. Carmina’s firm and his new personal home are both in downtown Buffalo.

Three other directors with expiring terms are being re-nominated. The election will be held next month.
