BTF report criticizes charter schools

The Buffalo Teachers Federation on Thursday issued a scathing report about the city’s charter schools, revealing that a majority of fourth- and eighth-graders at most of the schools failed at least one of their state assessments.

The BTF study shows that at one-third of the schools, between 70 percent and 87 percent of students failed at least one of the fourth or eighth grade assessments.

Those schools also tended to have lower numbers of students with disabilities, children living in poverty or those who are learning English.

BTF released the study less than a week before a hotly contested race for the Buffalo school board. Several of the candidates are campaigning on a platform to increase the number of charter schools in the city.

BTF President Phil Rumore said the union did not intentionally issue the release of the report to coincide with the election.
