Two Western New York boxers will fight for national titles after winning New York State open-class Golden Gloves championships Saturday night at The Tralf.
Akmed Aliyev and Drew Graziadei, both of Buffalo, won championships at open 141 and super heavyweight. Aliyev beat Trevon Hopkins of Buffalo via 2-1 decision. Graziadei earned a 3-0 triumph over Buffalo’s Duane Williams.
The national tournament is May 12-17 in Las Vegas. Only open-class champions advance to nationals.
Buffalo fighters finished as runners-up in two other open-class bouts. Rochester’s Sequan Felton decisioned Jeffrey Nguyot, 2-1, at 132 pounds. Luis Vargas of Syracuse at 152 pounds decisioned Mike Stevens, 2-1.
Other state champions from the area include Benjamin Serrano of Buffalo (123 novice), Valarie Apass of Tonawanda (141 sub novice), Buffalo’s Connor Smith (165 novice), Lockport’s Joe Taylor (201 novice) and Brad Stalman of Salamanca (super heavyweight masters).
