Delay any stadium deal until after Bills are sold
Before we wax too poetic about the “iron-clad lease” with the Buffalo Bills, consider this: published reports give the Bills’ net annual profits at about $140 million.
So Donald Trump or another billionaire could buy the team for $800 million, and in less than six years get his money back. Let’s see, six years would make it 2020. So Trump could pack up the team and leave with little penalty. Or, if the team was well-managed and its value increased by 2020, he could sell it at a profit and leave us wondering if the next owner would move the Bills.
No new stadium deal with significant public funding should be completed until after the Bills are sold. And before any new stadium is committed to, the new owner should agree to keep the team here.
