‘Games ’n Grapes’ fundraiser will benefit New Directions

The New Directions Youth and Family Services’ fifth annual wine-themed fundraiser is planned for 7 to 10 p.m. next Friday at Brierwood Country Club in Hamburg.

Titled “Games ’n Grapes – An Elegant Evening of Play to Support New Directions,” the event will feature wine and beer tastings, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, music, games, raffles and more.

In addition, there will be a variety of activities for guests to experience the value of play for New Directions youth, including fidget toys, word puzzles, a basketball arcade and a wine bottle toss.

Proceeds from the event will support the purchase of children’s recreation equipment and activities. New Directions’ blend of experiential and adventure recreational activities helps children at Wyndham Lawn Home for Children in Lockport, Randolph Children’s Home in Randolph, and New Directions’ Foster Care, Community-Based Prevention and Post-Adoption programs.

New Directions is a nonprofit agency with a 130-year history. Its mission is to foster resilient, self-reliant families and permanence for at-risk children in the shortest time possible, by promoting safe, respectful, responsible and goal-directed behavior.

“An important part of being a kid is to have the opportunity to participate in activities where they can have fun and learn important social skills at the same time,” said Jim Coder, executive director of New Directions. “Without the support of sponsors such as the First Niagara Foundation, we would have a difficult time in finding the resources to do this for the children who receive our services.”

The First Niagara Foundation will be the event’s signature sponsor. The event has moved to the Brierwood Country Club in order to accommodate the growing number of attendees.

“First Niagara believes in making our community a better place, and that starts with our youth,” said Elizabeth Gurney, executive director of the foundation. “We are proud to support New Directions and partner with them to provide opportunities for all children in our community to learn, grow and do great things.”

Tickets to the event are $40 per person or $75 per couple, which includes all wine tastings, hors d’oeuvres and any additional samplings. Guests also will be able to take part in a special prize raffle and basket raffles, featuring items such as Sabres tickets, a 32-inch television, Kindle Fire tablet, GoPro camera, dining certificates and Buffalo Bisons tickets.
