No Empire State Games in Rochester

An attempt to privately fund the Empire States Games this summer in Rochester fell well short of its goal, which means there will be no Games this summer.

The Empire State Sports Foundation, a Brighton-based nonprofit organization whose aim to revive the popular Olympic-style sports event for amatuers filed papers this month stating its intent to disband, according to a report in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

The Games started in 1978 and had been funded by the state until cut backs resulted in the 2009 edition being scrapped. Buffalo hosted the Games in 2010 with First Niagara Bank providing $500,000 to cover the cost of the event. But attempts to privately fund the Games since have failed.

The foundation had hoped to host the Games last year in Rochester but postponed it by a year due to financial issues.

According to the report, the foundation raised around $110,000 but papers filed in state Supreme Court showed it to be insolvent and owing $158,000 in debt.
