Akron man charged with importing bath salts

A 45-year-old man from Akron, N.Y., was arrested Thursday by federal agents and charged with illegally importing into the United States a synthetic drug called alpha-PVP which is commonly known as “bath salts.”

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said Rodney Howard was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh B. Scott and released on bond pending further proceedings May 7. Howard was arrested Tuesday in Akron, Ohio when he want to the U.S. Post Office there to pick up a package of 14 ounces of the “bath salts.”

Hochul said that Howard ordered the product over the Internet from China and had the package addressed to a friend who lives in Akron, Ohio. He is charged in a criminal complaint with importing, conspiracy to import and smuggling unto the U.S. the “bath salts.” If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, Hochul said.
