Two crashes within minutes in Lewiston/Town of Niagara area this morning

Driver inattention and speeding were reported in two crashes this morning, but freezing rain also caused area roads to be slick according to Lewiston police.

At 7:20 a.m., Sarah D. Matuszkiewicz, 20, was injured after her car crashed into a tree in the 2000 block of Mount Hope Road in the Town of Lewiston. Police did not list an address for her.

Earlier at 6:45 a.m. New York State Police assisted by Lewiston Police responded when a transporter truck loaded with cars went off the road and rolled over into a ditch on Witmer Road/Route 31 in the Town of Niagara. The transport truck driver was not injured.

The driver of the transport car carrier, Sean J. Lorraine, 46, of Niagara Falls, was driving a Western Star car carrier owned by Gold Rush Transport of Niagara Falls. He was traveling westbound on Route 31 when due to driver inattention the carrier drove off the right side of the road, rolling over and coming to a rest in a ditch. Charges are pending, according to state police.

Niagara County Hazmat teams were called to Route 31 as a precaution due to leaking fuel and the road was closed in both directions between Military Road and I-190 but has now reopened. state police say.

State police were being assisted by New York State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Town of Niagara Fire Department, State Parks Police, state Department of Environmental Conservation and Niagara County Health Department

Matuszkiewicz was injured when her car crashed into a tree in front of 2064 Mount Hope Road. She was taken by Tri-Community ambulance to Erie County Medical Center. Lewiston Police reported that speed was believed to be a factor in that crash.

Lewiston Police issued a weather alert shortly after the two crashes noting that freezing rain was changing to snow, causing slick conditions. Drivers were urged to use caution but it wasn’t clear whether weather played a role in the accidents.
