UB softball tops Eastern Michigan on Ryder homer

Heather Ryder hit a 3-2 pitch for a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth in the University at Buffalo’s 6-4 victory over Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference softball at Nan Harvey Field. The hit also scored Savanna Norcio, who had doubled.

UB (20-17, 4-2 MAC) took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a home run by Jessica Taylor, but had to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

“It feels great to see different people step up and make big plays for us,” coach Trena Peel said.

Jenn Consaul of Canisius (11-23, 2-6) pitched a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 win for a split at Saint Peter’s after the home team had won the opener, 1-0, on a walk-off homer.

St. Bonaventure (5-25, 2-5) gained a split against visiting George Washington, 5-3, after being shut out on a three-hitter, 8-0, by Meghan Rico.

Niagara (11-20, 2-6 MAAC) dropped a pair of 2-1 games at Manhattan.

BASEBALL: Mike Burke pitched a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts as UB (16-12, 7-4 MAC) defeated Western Michigan, 7-3, for a series sweep. Matt Pollock drove in three runs with a pair of hits.

Host Canisius (20-13, 8-4 MAAC) dropped it second series in a row, losing the rubber game to Siena, 7-3. Brett Siddall had three hits for the Griffs. … Niagara (10-21) was shut out, 6-0, by Fairfield’s Mike Wallace while St. Bonaventure (8-20, 2-0 Atlantic 10) left 13 runners on base in a 6-1 loss at George Mason.

ROWING: UB’s novice eight (7:16.20) finished second to Drexel (7:14.69) in the final at the Knecht Cup regatta on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Bulls’ varsity four (fifth) and second varsity four (fourth) reached the grand finale in their events while the varsity eight was third in the petit final.
