Letter: Kennedy’s stance is a reasoned approach

Kennedy’s stance is a reasoned approach

Recent comments written about State Sen. Tim Kennedy raise several questions. When did resisting the power of experience become equated with sound judgment? Who are these folks who believe that our community is best served by only providing medical care that conforms to their own personal religious beliefs, instead of the real needs of women? Am I really best served by politicians who would craft public policy solely without regard for the needs of my family, friends and neighbors?

Pro-choice and pro-life labels don’t reflect the conversation that is happening in America today. Instead of putting people in one category or another, we should respect the real-life decisions women and their families face.

I want my legislators to spend time thinking deeply about all the issues facing women in our community. I want them to show they understand the heartbreaking needs of women facing unexpected and unimagined medical decisions. I need my legislators to demonstrate they trust a woman’s ability, along with her medical provider, to know what is critical for the well-being of herself and her family.

Kennedy’s stance represents the reasoned approach to legislation we require in New York State. He understands that all women need and deserve equal protection and respect for their beliefs under New York State law in order for them to live healthy and productive lives.
