19th annual Grassroots Dinner on tap for April 26

Grassroots – the Buffalo-based, Democratic political organization – will hold its 19th annual dinner on April 26 in the New Golden Nugget Banquet Hall, 2046 Fillmore Ave.

This year’s dinner will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and also recognize some local leaders for their dedication to service. Among the scheduled recipients are Sheila L. Brown, co-owner of WUFO 1080 AM Radio, who will receive the Outstanding Business Award; Darryl C. Carter, director of the Science Technology Entry Program, or STEP, who will receive the Outstanding Community Organization Award; and Tianna Marks, a legislative assistant to Masten District Common Council Member Demone A. Smith, who will receive the Rising Star Award.

Phyllis Harris will receive the Charles Perkins/Margaret Strasner Community Activism Award, and African American Cultural Center Executive Director Agnes M. Bain will receive the Community Service Award.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-Brooklyn, will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $55. Proceeds will benefit the Grassroots Scholarship Foundation.
