Kotas stays on torrid scoring pace as Canisius lacrosse wins

Senior midfielder Maria Kotas (Lancaster) stayed on her hot scoring pace with four goals and two assists for Canisius in a 20-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse win over Siena in Loudonville.

Tori Quinn also scored four times for the Griffs.

Kotas leads the Griffs (7-5, 3-1 MAAC) with 39 goals and 15 assists for 54 points.

In another game, Niagara (5-6, 1-2 MAAC) lost to Marist, 19-7, in Poughkeepsie. Carrie Joe Farrugia had a pair of goals and an assist for the Purple Eagles. Marist (9-2) leads the MAAC with a 3-0 record.

BASEBALL: Niagara pitching shut down St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in the first game, but the Bonnies’ bats came alive for a 12-7 triumph in the nightcap of a Big 4 doubleheader Wednesday at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls. Starter Cody Eckerson (3-0) and Kevin Lucas limited the Bonnies to four hits in the opener. NU (9-19) had just two hits. Bona (7-18) scored 10 runs in the third inning of the nightcap. The outburst included a two-run homer by Dylan Dunn.

SOFTBALL: Aileen Hinton doubled home two runs in the top of the sixth and scored on a single by Desarae Maldonado to build a five run lead, then Niagara held off the University at Buffalo for a 9-8 victory in Amherst in the first game of their doubleheader. UB scored the last four runs of the game.

UB’s Holly Luciano tripled home two runs in a four-run first inning outburst then stole home on the front end of a double-steal as the Bulls (17-16) went on to a 6-3 win in the second game, which was called after five innings. Niagara is 11-16.

Canisius pounded out 29 hits and hit three home runs in sweeping a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure, 9-7 and 10-3.

Alexis Roman hit a solo homer for the Griffs in the opener and Lindsey Silfer went 3 for 3 in the opener. Silfer and Meghan Cuda homered in the second game. Cuda went 4 for 4 and Jessica Berzins had three hits for the Griffs (10-20). Emily McDonough and Katie Sinclair each had three hits on the day for the Bonnies (4-22).
