LOCKPORT – The Erie Canal Discovery Center, Church and Ontario streets, will celebrate the annual opening of the Erie Canal and Lockport Locks May 3-4 with a special event each day.

On May 3, kids and adults can visit the Discovery Center from noon to 3 p.m. to enjoy “1825 Family Fun,” a hands-on event featuring canal-related activities from the early 1800s. They will be able to assemble a wooden bucket, make a paper canal boat, try to load a packet boat, and learn about medicine from “Dr. Sarah Cushing,” as portrayed by Kay Burgess.

The ninth annual “Key to the Locks” Award presentation will be held inside the Discovery Center at 2 p.m. May 4. This award recognizes a citizen of Niagara County who promotes and exemplifies the community spirit, heritage, and integrity of the canal. The winner will be announced in mid-April.

Music will be provided for the occasion by The Heenans. The presentation will be open to the public and admission will be free.
