Democrats back Savage for vacant County Legislature seat

Peter J. Savage III, the City of Buffalo’s senior deputy corporation counsel, is in line to fill a vacant seat on the Erie County Legislature after winning the backing of Democratic committee members from District 3 on Saturday.

Savage, who has worked in city government for 19 years and had the support of Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown, won a four-way race for the nomination to fill the seat of Democrat Lynn M. Marinelli, who resigned from the Legislature in January to take a position with the Cuomo administration.

The seat has been vacant for three months as at least eight Democrats campaigned for the party nod.

In Saturday’s vote, Savage beat out former Legislator Michele M. Iannello; Jennifer L. Diagostino, executive director of the Coalition for Economic Justice; and Joel P. Feroleto, an aide to State Sen. Mark J. Grisanti, R-Buffalo.

The four Democratic members of the County Legislature must appoint Marinelli’s replacement, and that vote could come within two weeks. They are expected to follow past practice by accepting the recommendation of the Democrats from District 3, which covers Black Rock, Riverside, North Buffalo, Kenmore and part of the Town of Tonawanda.

Savage, a North Buffalo resident, 37, is married with two children. He said he isn’t required to step down from his city post if he serves on the Legislature but he will do so if he is appointed to the seat.
