Bisons, Stars advance in USA Hockey championships

Juliana Iafallo scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Buffalo Bisons to an 8-1 victory over Wisconsin in the USA Hockey Tier I 19U championships in Marlborough, Mass., on Thursday. Annika Zalewski added two goals and two assists while Rachael Farmer recorded 13 saves for the Bisons, who advance to face Shattuck-St. Mary’s at noon Friday.

Elsewhere, in Tier II 19U, the Buffalo Stars downed the Portland Pirates, 5-3, behind Jordan Roetzer’s two goals and two assists each by Alanna Herne and Haley Porterfield. The Stars take on Alaska at 2:25 p.m. Friday at Northtown Center at Amherst.

In Tier II, 14U Amherst fell to the CNY Bobcats, 2-1, and will meet the NJ Titans Friday morning at 9:55 at Northtown Center.

In Tier I, 16U at Marlborough, Mass., top-ranked Shattuck-St. Mary’s beat the Buffalo Regals, 6-0. Maddy Utz finished with 42 saves for the Regals who will play New Hampshire at 3:10 p.m. Friday.

In boys 14-under Tier I nationals, the Buffalo Regals beat Boston 6-3 as Matt Gasuik and Dylan Seitz each scored twice, while Erik Urbank and Colton McKenna each tallied once.

The Regals play Wisconsin today at 2 p.m. for right to advance to Saturday’s playoff round.

The Regals/Jr. Sabres 16-under Tier I and Clarence Tier II 18-under teams both lost Thursday but could each clinch a playoff round spot today with a win.
