April is Dig Safely Month and the state Public Service Commission is marking it by reminding excavators and contractors that state law requires them to call one of the state’s toll-free notification centers by dialing 811 before they start any project.
“Damage to utility facilities during excavation can result in loss of utility service, personal injury and property damage,” commission chairwoman Audrey Zibelman says. “I urge all excavators to do their part ... by simply dialing 811 before digging.”
Notification must be made at least two to 10 working days before the start of mechanized work. Digging with hand tools and agricultural tilling are not considered excavation.
Excavators who fail to follow regulations and cause damage to underground facilities will be held liable to pay for repair costs and civil penalties.
