Whistle-blower lawyer suing 60 insurance firms

A Buffalo lawyer is suing 60 insurance companies as part of a whistle-blower suit, claiming they failed to reimburse Medicare hundreds of millions of dollars.

J. Michael Hayes filed the civil lawsuit on behalf of himself and, if successful, could make millions as the sole whistle-blower in the suit.

The suit, filed under seal in 2012, was recently unsealed after federal prosecutors declined to intervene in the case at this time.

Hayes claims insurance companies often settle liability claims with Medicare beneficiaries but fail to pay back money Medicare had previously paid out for the beneficiaries’ health care.
