Neglia, BPO present Prokofiev’s star-crossed ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Romeo and Juliet, in Serge Prokofiev’s tragic ballet, never get a second chance. But anyone who missed the Neglia Ballet Artists’ acclaimed performance of the ballet in 2011 gets a second chance to see it when the Neglia reprises the production, joined by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Shea’s Performing Arts Center.

Sergio Neglia stars again as Romeo, a role to which he brings his own peculiar poignancy. Juliet is Argentinian ballerina Silvina Vaccarelli. They danced the famous pas de deux together at Artpark last summer when Artpark celebrated its milestone anniversary. Vaccarelli, a dancer from Buenos Aires’ famed Colon Theatre, also was Juliet to Neglia’s Romeo in 2011, and Steve Sucato, reviewing the performance for The News, called her performance stellar.

Starring equally, of course, will be the BPO, playing Prokofiev’s spiky, weirdly haunting score.

Tickets are $34.75 to $83.75. For information, call 847-0850.
