Clarence wins in nationals

Mathew Paonessa scored in the shootout to give the Clarence Mustangs a 3-2 victory over Team Ohio in a first-round game of the USA Hockey Tier II 18U championships in Wayne, N.J. Paonessa also scored a first period goal for the Mustangs with assists from Jacob Cohen and Louie Olivieri. After Ohio had taken the lead, John Delaney scored for Clarence at 13:40 of the second period to tie the game. Quinn Belter and Nick Godin assisted on the tally. Peter Chopra made 21 saves in net for Clarence, who will face the Mid-State (Pa.) Mustangs in a pool play game today at 5.

Elsewhere, the Buffalo Regals Tier I 16U girls team edged the New Jersey Colonials, 3-2, in Marlborough, Mass. All the scoring was in the second period, including two by Victoria Allard and one by Zoey Perchaluk. Allard’s second goal broke at 2-2 tie.

The Regals 14U team lost to the Little Caesars (Mich), 1-0, in Marlborough. Brittany Nowak made 26 saves in goal for the Regals.

In Tier II play at the Northtown Center Amherst, Cape Cod defeated Amherst, 12-1, in 14U. Amherst edged Steel City, 3-2, in 16U on Molly McDonnell’s goal with 3:21 left in regulation while the Buffalo Stars defeated Steel City, 3-1, in 19U with goals by Jordan Roetzer and Alanna Herne.
