Buffalo man arrested for posing as teen girl on social media sites

A 61-year-old Buffalo man who State Police accused of posing as a teenaged girl on social media sites to coax unsuspecting underaged teens to talk to him in his female disguise was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center following his Buffalo City Court arraignment Wednesday afternoon on a charge of possession of a sexual performance by a child. Richard D. Debruyn, arrested by troopers from the Boston station, was jailed in lieu of $7,500 bail.

Debruyn, who faces a City Court felony hearing Monday, was arrested after State Police received a Cyber Tipline Report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A search of his computers found Debruyn posted a photo of a female and tried to portray himself as that female on social media sites in what troopers described as attempts to have conversations with unsuspecting underage teens.

Debruyn was also accused of possessing nude images and a video of underage girls in the performance of sexual acts, according to state police spokesmen. Members of State Police Troop A’s Computer Crimes Units, and investigators from its Boston, Clarence and Buffalo offices took part in the investigation. Debruyn was turned over to Buffalo police for further proceedings.
