McCrea, Baron are honorable mentions

University at Buffalo senior forward Javon McCrea and Canisius senior guard Billy Baron were among 40 players who received honorable mention for the Association Press All-America Men’s Basketball Team announced this week.

McCrea, the all-time leading scorer in UB history with 2,004 points, was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and made the MAC all-conference team three years in a row.

The last UB players to receive honorable mention All-America were Turner Battle in 2005 and Mitchell Watt in 2012.

Baron, was the Pepsi Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the year. In his senior season he averaged 24.1 points. 5.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds a game. With 821 points he was just the second player in Canisius history to score more an 800 points in a single season. He is the first Griff to earn All-America honors since Ray Hall in 1984-85.

Although they were not among the 15 players selected to the AP first, second and third All-American teams, McCrea and Baron were in good company. Among other honorable mentions of note were: Tyler Ennis of Syracuse, Marcus Paige of North Carolina, Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State, Adreian Payne of Michigan State, Fred VanVleet of Wichita State, Patric Young of Florida and DeAndre Kane of Iowa State.
