State needs to pass Fair Elections Act
New Yorkers finally have the opportunity to support reform in the way political campaigns are financed. A new Fair Elections Act aims to enlarge the influence of the everyday New Yorker versus the power of the highest bidder. The proposed reform would award candidates a 6-to-1 match in small contributions up to $175 from existing funds, not new taxes.
The present New York contribution limit is $60,800 – a very loud voice indeed. The Fair Elections Act would provide for strong enforcement and transparency, the disinfectants our politics need. The beneficiaries of the present system will change their ways when the electorate insists on it.
