LOCKPORT – A man was arraigned Thursday in Niagara County Court on charges of beating up his 89-year-old grandmother.

Jerry D. Sweney, 45, had been living with her on Independence Avenue in Niagara Falls for eight years when the alleged crime occurred Dec. 20. Sweney is charged with three counts of second-degree assault and single counts of second-degree unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Assistant District Attorney Lisa M. Baehre said the woman, who has since turned 90, is in a nursing home as a result of being hit in the head. Judge Matthew J. Murphy III ordered Sweney jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail to await further proceedings.
