SILVER CREEK – A committee to support the construction of a new Veterans’ Memorial Park met for the first time Tuesday at the Hanover Town Hall.
The Hanover Veterans Memorial Committee will be chaired by Town of Hanover Councilman Wayne Ashley. He said the town board has supported the idea of a park and memorial site and will allow the committee to plan the project on land adjacent to the town hall on Hanover Street.
Ashley said he would like to honor each branch in the armed services, including the Merchant Marines and would like a special monument dedicated to prisoners of war and those missing in action.
He said he has the cooperation of some local professionals who will help with the design and hopes to get some volunteers to assist with landscaping.
Linda DeFries-Johnson will chair the first fund raising event to be held at the Firemen’s Club on Jackson Street in Silver Creek. There will be a meat raffle and other events.
Ashley said he will begin by sending letters to local veterans organizations seeking support. He said he would like to plan for completion on Veterans Day in November this year.
The group plans to meet every two weeks during the planning phases.
