An emotionally-distraught 28-year-old woman surrendered peacefully to Det. Sgt. Gary E. Teague and his Buffalo Police crisis management team about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, ending more than four hours of intense talks that brought members of the Buffalo Police SWAT team to an apartment building at Ashland Avenue and Summer Street where the woman was making suicidal threats while holding a loaded handgun.

The woman, who police would not identify, was taken to Erie County Medical Center for an evaluation. Police said it was unlikely she would face any criminal charges and they refused to say whether any hostage was involved.

The incident began with a call to police about 7 p.m., and by 8 p.m. a police staging area had been set up in a parking lot near the apartment building.

During police negotiations with the woman, Summer Street was closed to traffic between Richmond and Elmwood Avenues after 8:30 p.m. Rural Metro ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene.

Police declined comment on the type of firearm the distraught woman was holding.
