Job hunter disappointed at cancellation of job fair at UB

Dressed in just a black suit and tie, Ben Stilson stood out amid the driving snow in front of the Alumni Arena at UB’s North Campus.

Stilson, a University of Rochester senior, paid $25 for a taxi ride today to a University at Buffalo job fair, only to learn the moment that he arrived that the fair had been canceled because of the blizzard.

“Its disappointing. I called before I left to get here, and I was psyched. I even got a hair cut,” he said.

However the Kenmore native remained in a cheerful mood.

A chemical engineering major, Stilson said the job fair attracts many companies looking for people with his academic background.

“Hopefully they will reschedule this,” he said.

The weather, of course, lead to similar cancellations throughout Amherst.

For instance, the Buffalo Medical Group closed all 24 of its locations at noon, including its main offices in Buffalo, Orchard Park and Amherst.

“With the severity of the weather, the situation isn’t just safe,” said spokesman Joe Martone.

A Wegmans store on Sheridan Drive near Evans Street was lightly crowded earlier this morning.

Several employees said that preparations were under way to send home workers who lived a distance from the store.

“We never close because of the weather, but we will work with a skeleton staff,” one employee said.

It was busy as usual at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

“Most personnel arrived at work, and services were largely unaffected by the storm,” said Michael Hughes, spokesman for Kaleida Health.

But that could quickly change as employees shifts change later this afternoon.

“We are monitoring the situation by the hour. The afternoon shift change is the critical time, and we will get a sense of where we are then,“ said Hughes.
