Eastbound Thruway closed west of Syracuse, open in Buffalo area

The eastbound Thruway is closed between Exit 46-Henrietta just west of Rochester to Exit 40-Weedsport just west of Syracuse because of a multiple vehicle accident, officials said this afternoon.

Thruway spokesman Dick Keane said officials decided to close the approximately 60-mile stretch after the accident snarled traffic near Exit 42-Waterloo in Seneca County around 3:15 p.m.

“We originally said it would be for two to three hours, but chances are it will be for longer,” Keane said, adding he had no details on whether injuries were sustained.

“It involves several vehicles – a tractor trailer and passenger cars in a multi-vehicle accident,” he said. “It will be a while before it gets cleared because they’re having the same weather we’re having – blowing and drifting snow.”

Keane said Thruway officials decided to close such a large stretch of the road to allow eastbound travelers more choices. They include I-390 southbound to I-86 for vehicles headed to Binghamton and the New York metropolitan area; Routes 5 and 20 for points east parallel to the Thruway, and Route 104 via Rochester for points east that lie north of the Thruway.
