PENDLETON – A Meyer Road woman told Niagara County sheriff’s deputies on Monday afternoon that she got a call on her answering machine from a man who said he was from the Internal Revenue Service legal affairs office who said she was being sued because she didn’t pay her taxes.
She said she called back the man, who had an Indian accent, and he told her she needed to fill out a form or the local sheriff’s department would be there to take her to jail for six months. She said he seemed flustered when she told him that she had paid her taxes and didn’t believe him.
The woman contacted the sheriff department, also providing them with the phone number, which had a 267 area code.
A sheriff dispatcher also called the number, giving a false name, and the man told the dispatcher that that he had not paid his taxes and would also be sent to jail. The call was recorded and sent to the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
