UB wrestler makes NCAAs; Atlantic Hockey quarters set

KENT, Ohio — Senior Nick Flannery of the University at Buffalo earned a place in the NCAA Tournament by finishing fifth in the 141-pound class of the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships on Sunday.

With an automatic bid to the NCAAs on the line, Flannery defeated Michael Shaw of Eastern Michigan in the consolation bracket. Flannery, a transfer from Cleveland State, scored a takedown in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead. He extended his lead to 6-2 with a reversal in the second period. In the third he earned the winning point with an escape with less than 10 seconds to go. He earned another point for riding time.

“It feels really good,” Flannery said. “I’ve been working all season long to make it to the tournament and prove myself on the national stage. This ride is not over yet and I’m really happy I made the decision to transfer to Buffalo because I wouldn’t have been able to qualify without” coach John Stutzman.

Flannery was the only Bull who made it the second day of competition at the Kent State Memorial and Athletics Convocation Center.

The Bulls finished last among nine teams with 12.5 points while Missouri overtook first-day leader Northern Iowa to win a second straight MAC title with 118.5 points. Northern Iowa had 116. Old Dominion had 97 for third. Missouri, Northern Iowa and Old Dominion compete in MAC wrestling as associate members of the conference for the sport.

The NCAA Nationals will begin on March 20 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

• Robert Morris’ 3-1 win over Army on Sunday means Canisius will visit Bentley in a best-of-three Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series starting Friday near Waltham, Mass., while Niagara will travel to Colorado Springs to face Air Force in another quarterfinal series Friday.

Holy Cross faces top-seeded Mercyhurst, while Robert Morris visits host Connecticut in other quarterfinal series in the conference.

Winners advance to the semifinals March 22 at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena. The final is March 23 at Blue Cross Arena.
