O’Connor sets record as UB places third in MAC swimming

University at Buffalo senior Dan O’Connor won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a pool record 15:04.6, and the Bulls finished third in the final team standings of the Mid-American Conference Men’s Swimming Championships on Saturday at the Alumni Arena Natatorium

UB also got a second-place finish from senior Mike Dugan in the 100 freestyle and a third from freshman Scott Huang in the 200 breaststroke. Previously, Dugan had won two individual titles in the meet.

UB entered the final night of the meet in second behind eventual champion Missouri State. Paul Le won the 200 backstroke to lead Missouri State to 50 points in that event to take total control and Eastern Michigan passed the Bulls by picking up 37 points in the backstroke. Uvis Kalnins of Missouri State won the 100 freestyle in a pool record 43.61 seconds. Mike Fisher of Eastern Michigan won the 200 backstroke in a meet record 1:56.82 to basically sew up second place for the Eagles. EMU’s Krzyszt Gilski won the 200 fly in a pool record 1:46.01 and Missouri State closed it out with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay in a pool record 2:56.97. Dugan anchored a fourth-place finish for UB in the relay. Missouri State had 833 points, Eastern Michigan was second among the seven teams with 682 and UB followed with 657.

WRESTLING: UB was ninth among nine teams in team scoring and Nick Flannery at 141 pounds was the only Bull to make it to today’s second day of the MAC Championships in Kent, Ohio. Flannery won a pair of decisions after a quarterfinal loss to Zach Horan of Central Michigan, 15-5. Justin Farmer (133 pounds), Wally Maziarz (157) and James Benjamin (285) won their opening matches but did not survive the quarterfinals, then lost in the consolation round. Northern Iowa, the only undefeated NCAA Division I team, leads the meet with 97 points. Missouri (89.5) is second and Ohio U. (79) third. UB had 10.5 points.
